At one time Cirencester, then known as Corinium was the capitalof the Romans' first province in Britain, second in size onlyto London.

Three Roman Roads used back then are still used today: Akeman Street, Fosse Way and Ermine Street. At theCorinium Museum there is an extensive collection of Roman relics, and at Quern Hill, the remnants of a Romanamphitheater can be found. Other attractions include the 14th-century St. John the Baptist Church which is one of the largest inEngland. Cirencester has always been a market cityand each year horse trials, hot-air balloon rides, and polocompetitions are held during the summer months.
