Monmouth is the capital of Monmouthshire, located on the Wye at its blend with the Monnow.

There are remains of old town walls and fragments of the 12th-century palace, a favorite residence of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and the birthplace of Henry V. The 13th-century gate of the bridge over the Monnow is another feature of interest.
