Tipperary Town is situated in County Tipperary.

It name derives from Gaelic for "Well of Ara. " It is a market place city in the heart of the Golden Vale and lies on the major route between Limerick and Cashel. King John of England built a palace here towards the end of the 12th century and an Anglo-Norman settlement developed. The Augustinians started an establishment here in the 13th century, of which the chancel arch remains.
